Minneapolis families

Dyslexia tutoring for Minneapolis families

Closer than it sounds. We do not have a Minneapolis office. Our St. Paul center at 244 Brimhall Street sits just across the river, about 4 to 5 miles from Longfellow, Prospect Park and Nokomis. Minneapolis children come to us for one-on-one, structured-literacy tutoring in reading and spelling, and for math and homework help too.

Getting here from Minneapolis

One river, a short drive.

Our Saint Paul center is in the Mac-Groveland and Merriam Park area, close to the Mississippi. For south and southeast Minneapolis it is often closer than parents expect. Distances on the right are driving miles to 244 Brimhall Street, measured from the middle of each neighborhood; your own trip depends on your street and the time of day.

Sessions are one-on-one and by appointment, so we build a schedule that fits after school, and the same tutor works with your child every week.

What your child gets

Dyslexia tutoring built for how dyslexic children learn

Children with dyslexia rarely need more of the same reading practice. They need reading taught explicitly, one sound and one pattern at a time, until it is secure.

Structured literacy, one-on-one

We teach reading and spelling with the Orton-Gillingham based Barton Reading & Spelling System. Students build words with color-coded tiles, so the sounds and patterns of English become something they can see, hear and move. Children who need phonemic awareness first begin with our Foundations in Sounds program.

Mastery before moving on

The program has ten levels. At the end of each one your child takes a post-test and must pass at 80 percent or higher before moving ahead, so nothing is skipped and every new skill rests on a solid one.

Progress you can see

A WIST assessment sets a standardized baseline at the first visit, and we reassess every six months. Results come back as standard scores, percentile ranks and grade equivalents, the same language a formal evaluation uses.

More than reading

Many children who struggle with reading also struggle with spelling, writing or math. We tutor math with Math-U-See, in person or online over Zoom, support dysgraphia, and offer in-person homework help, all under one roof.

Minneapolis schools

When the school’s reading letter comes home.

Minnesota’s READ Act requires public schools to screen every child in kindergarten through grade 3 three times a year, and to tell parents when a child is not reading at grade level. If that notice has come home from a Minneapolis school, you do not have to wait to see whether things improve on their own.

We work with children who attend Minneapolis Public Schools, as well as private, charter, parochial and home-school families. Our tutoring does not replace what happens at school; it adds the explicit, one-on-one instruction a busy classroom cannot give. If your child has an IEP or 504 plan, we build around its goals, and with your permission we share screening and progress results with the school team.

We are a structured-literacy remediation center, not a diagnostic clinic. If a full evaluation would help, our guide to dyslexia testing in Minnesota explains the free school route and the private one.

Signs worth a conversation

You might be seeing

  • Guessing at words from the first letter or the picture
  • Reading the same word correctly on one page and not the next
  • Spelling that falls apart in writing even after the list was learned
  • Tears, stalling or stomach aches at homework time
  • A bright child who seems to be working much harder than classmates

In person first, online later

Can a Minneapolis child do this online?

Yes, once they are ready. We tutor online over Zoom, but online sessions become available only after a student has completed levels one and two. Those early levels build the sound skills everything else rests on, and they are taught in person at the table with the tiles. So Minneapolis children start in person, usually at our Saint Paul center, and the option to continue online opens once those two levels are complete.

The first visit is free: a short conversation about your child’s history and goals, a roughly 15-minute screening to confirm the program is a good fit, and a WIST assessment to set a baseline. You leave with real information about your child and a clear plan, whether or not you enroll. Sessions then run twice a week for 50 minutes. If cost is a worry, ask about our scholarship fund.

Prefer the east side of the metro? We also have an Oakdale center, and our online tutoring page explains how lessons work on a screen.

Proof it is working

We measure reading, so you can see the growth.

A standardized assessment shows where your child starts, and we reassess every six months. You get an honest, concrete picture of progress, not just a feeling that things are better.

Common questions

Minneapolis families ask us

Do you have a Minneapolis office?

No. We do not have a Minneapolis office. Minneapolis families come to our Saint Paul center at 244 Brimhall Street, Saint Paul, MN 55105, which is about 4 to 5 miles by car from Longfellow, Prospect Park and Nokomis.

Can my Minneapolis child do dyslexia tutoring online?

Yes, once they are ready. We tutor online over Zoom, and online sessions become available once a student has completed levels one and two. Those first levels are taught in person, so Minneapolis children start in person, usually at our Saint Paul center.

Do you work with Minneapolis Public Schools students?

Yes. We work with students from Minneapolis Public Schools and from private, charter, parochial and home-school settings. With your permission we can share screening and progress results with your child's school team, and we are glad to support the goals in an IEP or 504 plan.

Does my child need a dyslexia diagnosis to start?

No. A diagnosis is welcome but never required. The first visit is free and includes a short interview, a roughly 15-minute screening, and a WIST assessment that sets a standardized baseline.

How often are sessions?

Two 50-minute one-on-one sessions per week, by appointment. Consistency is what makes structured literacy work, so we keep the same tutor with your child week after week.
