Math tutoring in St. Paul, one-on-one
Math that finally makes sense. One-on-one math tutoring at our St. Paul center on Brimhall Street, for children who have fallen behind, who cannot make math facts stick, or who have dyscalculia. We rebuild math from the ground up with hands-on Math-U-See, and we tutor math at our Oakdale center and online too.
When math has stopped adding up.
Many children struggle with math for the same reason they struggle with reading: they were moved ahead before the basics were secure. Each new math unit then rests on a gap, and the gap gets wider every year. More worksheets do not close it; going back and building the missing step does.
Our math tutoring is for St. Paul children who need that rebuilding, whether the trouble started with counting, with place value, with fractions, or with the first word problem that would not make sense. It is also for children with dyscalculia, for whom numbers simply do not stick the way they do for classmates.
Signs math needs a reset
- Still counting on fingers for simple math well past the early grades
- Math facts that never seem to stick, no matter how much practice
- Word problems that feel overwhelming even when the reading is fine
- Little sense of whether an answer is even reasonable
- Anxiety, tears or shutting down around math homework
Concrete first, then the symbols
We teach math with Math-U-See, a structured, hands-on program built around mastery, one-on-one with the same tutor every week.
Manipulatives first
Children build numbers with physical blocks, so the “why” behind a math idea is something they can see and touch. Only once the idea is concrete do we move to the written problem.
Mastery before moving on
A new math skill is added only when the one beneath it is solid. That is slower than a classroom pacing guide at the start and much faster later, because nothing has to be re-taught.
The steps worksheets skip
We slow down for the steps that timed worksheets skip over, so a child who freezes under pressure can show what they actually understand.
Word problems, step by step
We find exactly where a problem becomes difficult, whether that is reading it, picturing it or choosing the operation, and teach that step. Our math and word problem guide goes deeper.
When reading is part of the math problem.
Many children who find math hard also struggle with reading, writing or attention. A word problem is a reading task before it is a math task, and a child who cannot decode the question cannot show what they know about the answer.
Because we tutor both, one center can look at the whole picture. A child can work on math with Math-U-See and on reading and spelling with our structured-literacy tutoring. We also offer homework help and ADHD homework support for the assignments that come home in between.
Built around your child
Every plan starts with a free consultation and a Math-U-See assessment, so we begin exactly where your child is in math, not with a generic curriculum.
Math tutoring on Brimhall Street
Our Saint Paul center is at 244 Brimhall Street, in the Mac-Groveland and Merriam Park area. It is convenient to Highland Park, Summit Hill, Como and the rest of the city, and to Roseville, Falcon Heights, West St. Paul and south and southeast Minneapolis. East-metro families can use our Oakdale center, and math tutoring is available online over Zoom as well.
We work with students from Saint Paul Public Schools and nearby districts, and from private, charter, parochial and home-school settings. Tutoring does not replace school math; it fills the specific gaps that make school math hard. If your child has an IEP or 504 plan with math goals, we build around them.
The first visit is free: a conversation about your child’s history and goals and a Math-U-See assessment, so you leave with real information and a clear plan, whether or not you enroll. Ongoing pricing depends on each student’s needs, and we share it in full at the consultation. If cost is a worry, ask about our scholarship fund.
Math tutoring in St. Paul, answered
Where do you offer math tutoring in St. Paul?
At our Saint Paul center, 244 Brimhall Street, Saint Paul, MN 55105, in the Mac-Groveland and Merriam Park area. We also tutor math at our Oakdale center and online over Zoom.
Which math program do you use?
Math-U-See, a structured, hands-on program built around mastery. Children work with physical manipulatives so they can see and touch what a number means before they move to symbols on paper.
Does my child need a dyscalculia diagnosis for math tutoring?
No. A diagnosis is welcome but never required. Any family looking for help with math is welcome to start with a free consultation, and a Math-U-See assessment shows us where to begin.
What ages do you tutor in math?
Students can begin as early as kindergarten, and we work with learners all the way through college. Every student is placed where their understanding actually is, not where their grade level says they should be.
Can you help with the math homework my child brings home?
Yes. Alongside rebuilding foundations, we help with current assignments, and we teach the steps for breaking a problem down so your child can start working more independently.
Can you support my child's IEP or 504 math goals?
Yes. We are glad to understand the math goals in your child's IEP or 504 plan and support them, and with your permission we can share progress results with the school team.
