What is dysgraphia?
Dysgraphia is a learning difference that makes writing hard. It can show up as messy or painfully slow handwriting, trouble forming and spacing letters, an awkward pencil grip, or a wide gap between how much a child knows and how little they can put on paper.
It has nothing to do with how smart or how hard-working a child is. It often travels with dyslexia, and the good news is the same thing helps both: direct, structured, hands-on teaching that builds the skill step by step instead of expecting it to come on its own.
Signs of dysgraphia

- Handwriting that is slow, messy, or hard to read no matter how hard they try
- Grips the pencil awkwardly, or presses so hard it tires their hand
- Uneven letter size and spacing, or mixes capital and lowercase letters
- Can tell you a rich story out loud but writes only a sentence or two
- Spelling and punctuation fall apart the moment they have to write
- Copying from the board or a book is slow and full of errors
- Avoids writing tasks, or melts down when one is unavoidable
- Trouble organizing thoughts on paper even when they know the material
- Letter reversals or unusual letter formation past the age you’d expect
- Written work is far below what they can do out loud or when a test is read to them
- Also struggles with reading or spelling (dysgraphia often travels with dyslexia)

What is dysgraphia?

How is dysgraphia different from dyslexia?
Dyslexia mainly affects reading and decoding. Dysgraphia mainly affects writing, both the physical act of handwriting and organizing thoughts into written words. The two often occur together, and the same structured, multisensory teaching helps both.
Do you need a diagnosis to start?
No. A formal diagnosis is never required. Every student begins with a free consultation and an assessment, then a plan built around what they need. Structured support helps any child struggling with writing and spelling, not only those with a formal label.
