We begin with a short interview about your child’s history and goals, a short screening, and a WIST assessment that sets a standardized baseline. You leave with a clear plan, whether or not you decide to enroll.

Every session is one-on-one with a tutor who adjusts in the moment. Nothing is guessed, and nothing advances until a skill is truly mastered. For a child behind in reading that means starting exactly where the gaps are, not where the grade level says.

We reassess with the WIST every six months and report standard scores, percentile ranks, and grade equivalents, the same language used in a formal evaluation. With your permission we share results with your child’s school team.

Families come to us at 244 Brimhall Street, St. Paul, MN 55105, in the Mac-Groveland neighborhood, and at 7815 3rd Street N, Suite 103, Oakdale, MN 55128, minutes from Woodbury, Maplewood, Lake Elmo, Stillwater, and White Bear Lake. Live online sessions over Zoom reach families anywhere in Minnesota. Online sessions become available once a student has completed levels one and two. Sessions are by appointment.

Questions families ask
Reading tutoring: what parents want to know first
Does my child need a dyslexia diagnosis to start?
No. A diagnosis is welcome, but it is never required to enroll. Any family looking for help with reading, writing, spelling, homework, or math is welcome to start with a free consultation. Our screening and assessment show us where your child stands, and we start there.
How often will my child meet with a tutor?
Two 50-minute sessions per week. This is the schedule Susan Barton, who developed the Barton Reading and Spelling System, recommends. Consistency is what makes it work: when sessions are spaced too far apart, students spend the next lesson reviewing instead of moving forward.
How long does the program take?
The Barton system has ten levels, and each level has a different number of lessons, so the full program usually takes about three to four years. Every child moves at their own pace and advances only once a skill is mastered.
What does tutoring cost?
The first visit, including the consultation, screening, and baseline assessment, is free. Ongoing tutoring varies with each student’s needs, so we share detailed pricing through our contact form or at your consultation, with no surprises. If cost is a worry, ask about the Irene Turner Christy Scholarship.
